Blood, Diamonds and The Postman Poet

IL Postino and Blood Diamond are 2 Movies linked by it's stars: Leonardo Dicaprio starring in "Blood Diamond" and Phillipe Noiret who plays the real-life poet  Pablo Neruda in" Il Postino" (or "The Postman").  Noiret starred in Il Postino and also appeared in 'Round Midnight which was directed by Martin Scorsese who directed The Departed with Dicaprio. That was linked within 3 degrees courtesy of Cinema FreeNet (www.cinfn.com).
BLOOD DIAMOND stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Connelly and Djimon Honsou.  It's a socially conscience movie with all the action, war, good guys and bad guys of an action movie.  It's also about greed and the evil men do to their fellow man.  The people who lived and live now in Sierra Leone suffered and are still suffering at the hands of the diamond trade and not reaping any of the rewards, but living in sickness and terror.  It's a good Hollywood-type movie with a true life history.  The movie was adapted from a book that is going to be re-released by the author next year to bring to light the fact that not much has changed, even though the U.N. and several countries including our own have made policies to end the kind of suffering that has been going on with the diamond trade, it continues with the barest amount of oversight.  Off my soapbox, this is an absorbing, fast-paced movie and a good way spend some time movie-watching for anyone who can watch an "R" rated movie--lots of language there.

IL POSTINO is a favorite foreign movie of mine for many reasons.  It was the 1st foreign movie I took my son to see and when he went to Europe he went there, I believe, as a sentimental gesture as well as for his love for movies.  I love it because it involves a story about my favorite poet, Pablo Neruda.   I love it because it is a very good movie.   But I’m not alone in thinking so.  It won several awards when it came out including the Academy Award for best foreign picture.  According to IMDb.com it ran in theaters for almost 2 years in New York and was still so when the movie hit video and cable TV.
The movie is about a bicycle postman in a small fishing town in Italy whose only customer is Pablo Neruda after he comes to live on the island when in exile from Chile.  The 2 become friends through their passion for poetry and the postman's desire to woo a young woman. It is a beautiful film in more ways than just cinematography, that has tragedy, politics, romance, friendship and more in the mix. I don't like to give too much away because if you take my word it, this is (another foreign movie that, again, if you don't watch foreign movies you are missing out on the best!) well worth watching.  If you're looking for another good one and don't need Hollywood action movies or you're on a date, this one is it.
